YCSO Welfare Check Recently In Ash Fork Turned Up A More Serious Matter

A simple welfare check by Yavapai County Sheriff’s deputies turned up a bigger matter recently. Last month officials received information from the post office in Ash Fork that 67-year-old John McCabe hadn’t picked up his mail for over a year. Deputies went to his house to do a welfare check. When they arrived they found 76-year-old Terry Welfenberg on McCabe’s property. Weifenberg told deputies McCabe left two years ago. He also told him he broke into the victim’s home, stole some firearms and decide to live there. Detectives were unable to determine if McCabe was still alive or not. While searching the property, a volunteer found a skull fragment in the fire pit. Detectives then found several other bone fragments. The next day detectives found McCabe’s medial id bracelet and his wallet. Weifenberg was arrested and charged burglary and theft of the firearms. Charges in connection with McCabe’s death are pending.
