The Coconino National Forest has decided to suppress two lightning-caused fires being used for forest health south of Flagstaff. The Scott Fire is located about five miles south of Kachina Village between Interstate-17 and Highway 89A. It was first reported on July 31st at 5 p.m. The Scott Fire has burned 180 acres of ponderosa, oak and small amounts of juniper. The Luke Fire was also reported on July 31st at 4 p.m. between I-17 and Stoneman Lake. That fire has burned nine acres. After making the decision to manage both fires for the long-term benefit of the forest, Fire managers have decided to fully suppress the Scott and Luke fires for several reasons, including predicted wind and weather conditions. A full suppression strategy will also free up firefighters and other resources for use on other emerging incidents in the area.
