Texas Hiker Dies On The River Trail Near Phantom Ranch In The Grand Canyon Saturday

A 69-year-old Texas hiker passed away halfway between Silver Bridge and Black Bridge near Phantom Ranch in the Grand Canyon Saturday evening. National Park Service officials say Scott Sims of Austin, Texas was hiking on the River Trail when he became semi-conscious at around 7 p.m. The hiker became unresponsive as bystanders initiated CPR minutes later as paramedics arrived from Phantom Ranch. Attempts to resuscitate Sims were unsuccessful. Sims was trying to reach Phantom Ranch for an overnight stay via the South Kaibab Trail. Temperatures can reach over 120-degrees in the shade during the summer time in that area. Park Rangers strongly advise not hiking in the inner canyon during the heat of the day between the hours of 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. An investigation into the incident is being conducted by the National Park Service, in coordination with the Coconino County Medical Examiner.
