The NAU Lumberjacks football team got a huge win on the road Saturday, with a tough 10-3 win over the Sam Houston Bearkats in Texas. The Lumberjacks defense was stellar during the game. They set the tone in the first half, with four sacks and six tackles for a loss. NAU linebacker Heston Lameta led the Jacks with eight solo tackles and a sack. Sophomore quarterback R.J. Martinez was 27-for-41 for 214 yards with a rushing touchdown. Hendrix Johnson had eight catches for 101 yards in the win. The offense took advantage of short yardage situations throughout the game, converting four-of-five fourth downs, including a game-clinching fourth-and-one conversion late in the game. NAU head coach Chris Ball said after the game that the win is “big for our program. To play this type of program, that’s going up to FBS, our kids had no fear.” The Lumberjacks are now 1-1 on the season and return home to the Skydome at Findlay Toyota Field to host the North Dakota Fighting Hawks next Saturday. Kickoff is at 1 p.m.
