NAU Falls To #7 Weber State 33-31, Finishes The Season 3-8

The NAU Lumberjacks put a wraps on the 2022 season Saturday in the inaugural Red Rock Rivalry Game in the Skydome, falling to seventh-ranked Weber State 33-31. The Jacks trailed 14-0 in the first quarter before they gathered themselves and found a rhythm. NAU got on the board with a 45-yard touchdown pass from R.J. Martinez to Hendrix Johnson to cut the score to 14-7. On the ensuing kickoff, Weber State kick returner Abraham Williams returned it 100 yards for the touchdown. It was his fourth kick return for a score this season. All four returns went for 100 yards each. However, NAU mounted a drive finishing with a Draycen Hall seven yard touchdown run to make it 21-14. The Jacks got the ball back and after holding Weber State. on the next drive Martinez hit tight end Isaiah Gerena to tie the score at 21 at halftime. Weber State added a pair of field goals to go up 27-21 when Martinez threw his third touchdown of the game, this time to Johnson again for six yards for the score and NAU took at 28-27 lead. The Wildcats went back down the field as Kyle Thompson hit a 41-yard field goal as Weber State regained the lead, 30-28. Collin Robbins then hit a 39-yard field goal as the Jacks went back up 31-30. Then with five-seconds to play, Thompson hit his fourth field goal of the game to give Weber State the Red Rock Rivalry Trophy to take back to Ogden, Utah. Martinez was 31-of-43 for 285 yards and three touchdowns in the loss. Coleman Owen had 115 yards receiving and Hendrix Johnson had 113 yards and two touchdowns for NAU. The Jacks played in six games this season that were decided in the fourth quarter. They went 2-6, with three of those games against nationally ranked teams. NAU finishes the season with a 3-8 record. Weber State will go into the FCS Playoffs starting next week.
