Monsoon storms caused severe flooding of Highway 64 in Tusayan Tuesday.  The National Weather Service says about an inch to two-and-a-half inches of rain fell just east of Tusayan in two hours.  The rainfall caused the Coconino Wash to overflow and send three feet of water down the wash and across the highway, keeping visitors from coming into Tusayan from the west, and vehicles heading out of the South Rim of the Grand Canyon going west.  Pictures from the area showed water and debris filling the streets, stranding vehicles and sending commercial garbage containers floating down Highway 64.  Coconino County Sheriff’s officials say flooding also resulted in evacuations to some hotels and residential housing. Over 100 residents and guests were displaced and relocated to wait out the flooding. All students attending school at Grand Canyon Village were kept at the school until around 8 p.m.  Highway 64 has been cleared and is safe to travel.  Coconino County Emergency Management says Tusayan’s water system has been affected by the flood. They recommend residents boil their water prior to consuming as a precautionary measure.
