Flagstaff Goes Winless At NAU 7X7, However The Eagles Played With Top State Schools

The Flagstaff Eagles football team competed in the NAU 7×7 football tournament Saturday on the practice fields at NAU. The Eagles played five games in pool play. They fell to the Sabino Sabercats in the first game, lost by a touchdown to the B team from defending 5A champion Highland, lost in the last minute to Mesquite and lost by a touchdown to 6A top team Desert Mountain. To end the day, the Eagles fell to Campo Verde. Even though the Eagles went winless in the tournament, there is a lot to be impressed about. First and foremost, the attitude of the Eagles is much improved over previous years. New head coach Mickey Clements says that was the first thing that needed to be done. He says “right off the bat we were trying to get the weight room culture changed and get as many guys in there working as hard as we can and that’s really translated to the practice field too.” About 70 kids have come out for football so far this summer. The Eagles competed recently in a 7-on-7 tournament in Monument Valley, where they finished second. In the tournament they defeated Grand Canyon Region favorite Bradshaw Mountain. Summer workouts continue into fall camp all leading up to the season opener against Greenway in August in the Skydome.
