Flagstaff Falls, Coconino Wins On Week One Of High School Football Friday

The Flagstaff Eagles and Coconino Panthers opened up their seasons Friday as both schools debuted new coaches. The Eagles began the Mickey Clements Era by taking the ball on the first drive and drove down the field for a touchdown. However, Greenway answered back and that’s how the game went, back and forth. Until the Demons, with an eight point lead late in the game, had a snap on a punt go over the punter’s head and into the end zone where Tuffy Cullendar fell on the ball to cut the lead to two. On the two-point conversion try, Nano Birdno couldn’t bring down a Chase Brown pass and Flagstaff falls 35-33. Brown was 14-of-29 for 248 yards and two touchdowns and running back Jaden Wetzel had 25 carries for 145 yards and a touchdown in the loss. At Coconino, the Gary Cook era began as the Panthers scored on their first play of the game as Fernando Ramirez scored his first of three touchdowns as Coconino shut out Carl Hayden 51-0. The Panthers held the Falcons without a first down until three minutes left in the game. Coconino will have a bye next week and will host Payson in two weeks, while Flagstaff hosts the Somerset Academy Lions from the Las Vegas area next Friday.
