Father Of A Flagstaff Six-Year-Old Who Died After Being Locked In A Closet Gets A New Trial Date

The father of a six-year-old Flagstaff boy, who died in March of 2020 after being locked in a closet for about a month without food, is getting a new trial date. Anthony Martinez will head to trial in Coconino County Superior Court April 16th, after the previous trail date was vacated by the Arizona Court of Appeals. Martinez has been indicted on charges of first-degree murder and child abuse in the case. The boy’s mother, 26-year-old Elizabeth Archibeque pleaded guilty to first degree murder and child abuse back on May 24th. She received life in prison plus ten years on the child abuse charge in July. The boy, Deshaun Martinez, was found unresponsive at a home in the 31-hundred block of North Monte Vista Drive. Officers immediately began life-saving efforts until medical personnel arrived. They were not able to resuscitate Martinez and he was pronounced dead at the scene. His parents admitted to police that the boy, and his seven-year-old brother, were kept in the bedroom closet for about a month and denied food at times. The brother also appeared to be malnourished. The parents, and their grandmother, admitted the boys were being punished for stealing food by sneaking out of the house while the parents slept. Martinez’ mother Ann is facing the same charges and will head to trial in January.
