Cottonwood Police Arrest A Sexual Assault Suspect Friday After A Pursuit

Cottonwood Police arrested a man Friday, who had allegedly sexually victimized a younger family member over a four-to-five year period. Police say the suspect left his home, and a traffic stop was initiated. The suspect failed to stop and led police in a pursuit. Based on the severity of the charges and other aggravating factors, it was determined that the suspect posed a danger to victims, witnesses, and the community, and the decision was made to continue the pursuit. The fleeing suspect was eventually stopped on I-17 north of Cordes Junction by state troopers and Cottonwood Police officers using stop sticks and vehicle immobilization techniques. Once the pursuit stopped, the suspect barricaded himself inside the vehicle. Cottonwood Police negotiators contacted the suspect on his cell phone. They worked on getting him to surrender while SWAT officers used less lethal means to extract the suspect. While the suspect was barricaded, he attempted to take his own life by cutting himself. He was eventually taken into custody and flown a Phoenix-area hospital with a critical self-inflicted wound. Once the suspect is released from the hospital, he will be booked into the Yavapai County Jail on numerous felony charges for the alleged sexual misconduct and pursuit-related charges.
