Coconino Trails Early, Tries To Rally But Falls To Poston Butte 30-27 Friday Night

The Coconino Panthers got down 14-0 in the first quarter, tried to rally but fell short 30-27 on the road to the Poston Butte Broncos Friday night. Both early touchdowns came on big plays as Broncos quarterback Mason Lloyd took a snap 72 yards for the score and Quenton Jones picked off a Colton Buckingham pass and returned it 57 yards for a score. The Panthers then put a solid drive together, finishing on a one-yard touchdown run by Hayden Mickelson to get to 14-7. However, the Broncos would extend their lead to 30-13 in the third quarter before the Panthers rallied and scored two Bridger French touchdowns to get to 30-27 but that would be it as the Broncos would burn the last six minutes of the game and take a knee to get the win. Poston Butte had three, 100 yard rushers in the game and finished with 416 yards rushing. Quarterback Mason Lloyd had eight carries for 106 yards with two touchdowns, running back Michael Wittman had 26 carries for 127 yards and running back Jakhi Robinson had ten carries for 113 yards and two touchdowns in the win. Coconino quarterback Colton Buckingham was 20-of-40 for 236 yards with two interceptions. Bridger French had 85 yards on 17 carries with two touchdowns. Coconino hosts Bradshaw Mountain in the Grand Canyon Region opener Friday night. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
