The Arizona Interscholastic Association’s Executive Board will meet in an emergency meeting Tuesday, with winter sports they only topic on the agenda. The board voted 5-4 Friday to cancel winter sports for the 2021 school year due to surging cases of COVID-19 and the high rate of hospitalizations due to the virus. The board heard from their medical advisors during the long meeting. They recommended all athletes wear a mask on and off the court if games were to be played. Flagstaff High School Athletic Director Jeannine Brandel is one of the nine members of the board and she was one of the four who voted to play. She said during the meeting not playing could increase the stress on the healthcare system because schools have a mitigation strategy and that “students are safest with us.” There are no details into what they will discuss, or if there will be reconsideration of Friday’s decision. The meeting will take place at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday.
