Fire managers on the Kaibab National Forest will conduct a prescribed burn in areas north of Williams and Interstate 40 Wednesday. The burn is a continuation of the Three Sisters Prescribed Fire Project, which has been inactive since 2019. About 15-hundred acres will be targeted and the process is expected to take about one-to-two days to complete, although the Forest Service says the timing will depend on the conditions. People around the area may see or hear helicopters and are encouraged to avoid flying any type of aerial-drones that could interfere with the aircraft. For those who may be sensitive to smoke, strategies will be used by the Forest Service to limit the amount and duration of the fires and reduce potential risk to public health. Smoke is expected to be visible from the Williams area, especially from the Elephant Rocks Gold Course, the Williams Airport, Cataract Lake, Kaibab Lake, Ash Fork, Valle and portions of State Route 64 and Interstate-40. Smoke may settle in low-lying areas during the overnight hours. While there are no planned road or trail closures, the Forest Service says motorists should use caution when driving near sites where the project is active.
