A Family Found A Pipe Bomb Found Near Hillside Friday

A family hike turned into a dangerous situation in a remote area near Hillside Friday. A man and his children found an ammo can between granite boulders that contained a detonation cord, black powder, another suspicious object and an improvised explosive device, or IED. After realizing how dangerous this could be, the man contacted the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office. This IED was then identified as a two-inch galvanized pipe bomb with a detonation cord and horseshoe nails on the outside. The Arizona Department of Public Safety Bomb Squad was brought to the scene. They used robotic equipment to open the can and conducted controlled detonations of some of the material. A bomb detection dog was released to find other potentially explosive devices, but nothing was found. As of now, there are no suspects in connection with the IED.
