$1.7 million To Address Dangerous Abandoned Mine Lands In The Navajo Nation

The Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement announced Thursday that nearly $1.7 million will address dangerous and polluting abandoned mine lands and aims to create jobs and accelerate economic opportunity in the Navajo Nation. President Joe Biden’s Investing in America agenda for fiscal year 2023 will fund the effort. The goal is to provide a sustainable economy and healthy environment to communities and workers in transition after mines and power plants close. The Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement said abandoned mine lands reclamation supports jobs in coal communities by investing in projects that close dangerous mine shafts, reclaim unstable slopes, improve water quality by treating acid mine drainage, and restore water supplies damaged by mining.
